TV Discovers Recycled Polyester Yarns

Viewers of the Discovery Channel will be able to see textile recycling in action when the TV station visits US polyester yarn supplier Unifi to find out how it makes its 100% recycled 'Repreve' polyester yarn. (EcoTextileNews, June 2008)

Unifi Ready For Its Close-Up

Unifi's Repreve fiber is about to make it to the big time. The Discovery Channel selected the 100 percent-recycled polyester yarn as a feature for its television show How It's Made and plans to air an episode documenting the production of the fiber during season 12, which begins in January 2009. Unifi is the first U.S. textile mill to be featured on the show. (DNR, May 26, 2008)

Repreve Recycled Yarn Featured on FOX 8's "Made in NC" Series

The fiber waste created during the manufacturing of polyester at Unifi's plants was once sold off for lower-end use like stuffing. But that waste has been given a second chance. Unifi, Inc. unveiled a new consumer-focused, interactive website as part of its new "Repreve. For the Planet." campaign. Computer's recycled packaging bags an award

Hewlett-Packard won Wal-Mart's Home Entertainment Design Challenge - a contest that encourages companies to reduce the environmental impact of products in the home-entertainment category. HP replaced the box used for one of its products retail shelf packaging with the HP Protect Messenger Bag. (Packaging Digest, October 2008)

Repreve Takes a Uniform Approach

Perfection Uniforms has chosen Repreve, the 100% recycled fibre by Unifi, for its latest collection of uniforms and workwear.  The manufacturer of police, fire, and EMS uniforms, which was recently designated as one of Apparel magazine’s ‘Top 50 Most Innovative Companies’, has selected the Repreve family of polyester yarns, which have been independently certified for 100% recycled content by third-party auditor Scientific Certification Systems (SCS).   (EcoTextileNews, May 2008)

Smarter (and cuter) Grocery Bags

I don’t know about you, but I find it really hard to remember to bring my own bags to the grocery store. But that has all changed since I met with the ladies of BlueAvocado. BlueAvocado is a line of sustainable, reusable and machine washable grocery bags, and if they couldn’t get any more green, BlueAvocado has teamed up with Repreve to create a bag made from 50% recyclabe, traceable polyester fibers made from plastic bottles and crude oil. Bottle ban means business

No, the trash police aren’t on the way to your house. But on Oct. 1, it will be illegal for plastic bottles to find their way into North Carolina landfills. Keeping bottles out of landfills here should increase supplies of recycled bottles available to be turned into items such as more bottles, carpet and pricey outerwear. “The more people who engage in recycling plastics, the more that’s going to help companies like Unifi take advantage of a cost-competitive product,” said Roger Berrier, an executive vice president with the Greensboro-based textile maker.
